Every child's right to survive, learn, and be protected.
Save the Children partners with the Government of Tanzania, communities, and civil society to deliver health, education, protection, and social policy programmes across 15 regions of the Mainland and Zanzibar — including the Nyarugusu and Nduta refugee camps in Kigoma.
Three breakthroughs we're driving for children by 2030
Every programme in Tanzania — from a One Stop Centre in Kigoma to a classroom in Zanzibar — ladders up to one of these three commitments.
Survive
No child dies from preventable causes before their fifth birthday — the driving goal behind our health and nutrition work.
Learn
All children learn from a quality basic education, in safe and inclusive classrooms for both boys and girls.
Be Protected
Violence against children is no longer tolerated — in the home, online, at school, or in refugee settings.
From a maternal health clinic in Zanzibar to a nationwide movement
Save the Children is a global leader in development and humanitarian programming, working for over a century as a voice for children with governments, civil society, and the private sector.
Our first Tanzania programme opened in Zanzibar, focused on maternal, newborn, and child health. Today we work in 15 regions of Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, in both development and humanitarian contexts — including a sustained presence in the Nyarugusu and Nduta refugee camps in Kigoma Region.

Protection from violence
All children are protected from abuse, exploitation, violence, and digital harm, with strong mechanisms to remedy violence against them.
Social protection & resilience
Child-sensitive social protection and resilience-building for communities, to improve the wellbeing of children and youth.
Rights governance & participation
Government and local non-state actors' capacity is strengthened to deliver on children and youth's rights and ensure their participation in public decision-making.
The situation for children in Tanzania
Tanzania's population is 61.8 million — 44.8% are children under 15. Poverty, violence, and limited child-participation structures remain significant challenges.
Physical abuse affects 73% of girls and 72% of boys, mostly by relatives, and psychological abuse affects about 60% of children. While FGM prevalence dropped to 8% in 2022, it remains common in some regions, and child marriage persists in rural areas. Tanzania has developed laws such as the Law of the Child Act and national action plans on child labour and trafficking — but cultural attitudes and gender inequality still require sustained effort to shift.
